Attorneys general of four states announced last week that they had arrived at a $48 billion settlement framework with five drug companies over their role in the opioid epidemic. But while the idea is for other states to join in the agreement, several states are now questioning the deal.
And the proposal for the $48 billion settlement comes as a report this month from the Society of Actuaries pegged the cost to the U.S. economy of the opioid epidemic at $631 billion or more from 2015 to 2018. The figure includes an estimated workers’ compensation cost of $1.77 billion during that time.
