Former Mail Carrier Sent to Slammer for Workers' Comp Fraud

Thursday, May 5, 2016 | 0

A former mail carrier in Norfolk, Va., was sentenced to 13 months in prison on Tuesday for fraudulently collecting more than $157,000 in federal workers’ compensation benefits, the Virginian Pilot newspaper reported.

Ronald Henderson, a career postal worker, collected more than $64,000 in disability benefits and medical treatment disbursements, and received more than $93,000 in fraudulent reimbursements for travel to doctor appointments. Henderson pleaded guilty to his five-year scheme in December 2015.

The newspaper reported that Henderson has been ordered by the court to pay $163,956 in restitution to the federal government for the benefits he was paid.

According to news reports, Henderson had filed a workers’ comp claim for a shoulder injury he actually suffered while he was off duty.

He also was accused of “double dipping” for not notifying the Department of Labor that he’d returned to work, which resulted in his being paid his normal salary in addition to his workers’ comp indemnity benefits.
