Athletes meeting U.S. Olympic Committee or Canadian Olympic Committee criteria to qualify as amateurs would be exempt from workers’ compensation coverage and other labor law protections, under a bill the Oregon House of Representatives passed Tuesday.
The House voted 35-23 to pass HB 4093, introduced at the request of the House interim Committee on Judiciary, would exempt amateur athletes from workers’ compensation coverage, minimum wage requirements, unemployment benefits and limitations on employing minors.
