AIG Reconsiders Home Improvements After TV Station Report

Monday, November 28, 2016 | 2

A Southern California television station is taking credit for a decision by American International Group to make home modifications requested by a worker who was injured in a forklift accident.

The NBC4 I-Team reported that AIG admitted it had mishandled a claim filed by Ramon Contreras of Montebello by denying his request for a wheelchair ramp, modifications to his bathroom, a lightweight wheelchair and a new bed.

"AIG focused too closely on the workers' compensation process and not on Mr. Contreras' real and urgent needs," AIG said in a statement, according to the report. "We did not show flexibility and sensitivity in handling this situation."

AIG said it would immediately address the home modifications that Contreras requested.

According to Division of Workers' Compensation records, Contreras suffered injuries to his head, upper extremities, abdomen, chest and other parts in an April 27 accident while working for Epmar Corp.

NBC4 reported that Contreras' physician requested home modifications, but a utilization review physician found the improvements were not medically necessary. Contreras is represented by attorney Keith More, according to the report.
