After Conviction, 'Oxy Doc' Barred From Treating Injured Workers

Thursday, July 26, 2018 | 0

The New York Workers' Compensation Board has removed an 83-year-old physician from the list of authorized providers after he was convicted of illegally distributing opioid medications.

Dr. Martin Tesher, of New York City, was convicted last week of 10 counts of illegal distribution of oxycodone — more than 2 million pills altogether — and prescribing without a legitimate medical purpose, even to known addicts, according to a board bulletin and news reports.

Two of the counts were related to the overdose death of one of Tesher's patients, who died two days after an appointment with the doctor.

Tesher, dubbed "Dr. Feelgood" and the "Oxy Doc" in the New York news media, is now prohibited from rendering care to injured workers, the board said. His medical license also has been revoked.

The doctor faces 20 years to life in prison when sentenced, but told the New York Post that he probably won't last more than “one or two years” because of congestive heart failure and chronic kidney disease. He also said he's bankrupt.

A sentencing date has not been set.
