Hawaii employers will face higher fines for not carrying mandatory workers’ compensation coverage, and carriers could be hit with bigger penalties for not paying benefits as prescribed by law under a bill signed by Gov. David Ige.
House Bill 2363, by Rep. Joseph M. Souki, D- Kahakuloa, went into effect on July 1, the same day it was signed by Ige.
The bill increases employer penalties for operating without comp coverage to $100 per day from $10 per day for each employee. The bill also increases the minimum penalty for uninsured employers to $500 from $250.
