Past studies have shown that employers fail to report half of severe workplace injuries, but the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration has not employed consistent enforcement and practices to deter underreporting and ensure that hazards are abated, according to a report by the federal Labor Department’s Office of Inspector General.
The inspector general said OSHA enacted new rules in 2015 that required more detailed employer injury reports but has not given guidance to area offices on how to deter underreporting.
