The California Division of Labor Standards Enforcement fined 17 Los Angeles area car washes a total of $218,000 for operating without workers' compensation coverage following a two-day sweep.
In all, DLSE assessed against Southland car wash businesses fines and penalties totaling $1.3 million, according to a statement released Monday. Violations for failure to pay minimum wage and overtime resulted in $412,200 in penalties and $308,584 in liquidated damages.
