Lyft Drivers Would Remain Independent Contractors Under Proposed Settlement

A federal judge gave preliminary approval to a $27 million settlement that would give 163,000 current and former California drivers for the ride-hailing company Lyft enhanced protection against dismissals but would not clarify their employment status, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Workers for both Lyft and Uber have multi-million dollar lawsuits pending against the ride-hailing services, arguing that classifying drivers as independent contractors instead of employees unfairly locks out drivers from accessing benefits such as workers' compensation ...
