The Washington State Department of Labor & Industries fined AAA Contractors $437,581 for safety violations following its investigation of a fatal trench collapse.
Surjit Gill, 36, was killed Sept. 7 when the dirt walls of a trench he was working in gave way and buried him. L&I inspectors said Gill had been working in an 18- to 20-foot-deep trench at a new housing development. No one inspected the trench before Gill entered, and shields intended to prevent a collapse were inadequate for the soil type and depth, the department said.
