Gov. Bob Riley has appointed Jim L. Ridling as Alabama's new insurance commissioner, effective Sept. 15. Ridling, who is past president and CEO of Southern Guaranty and is one of the founders of River Bank and Trust, took over the position from Walter Bell. Bell, who was Alabama's first African-American insurance commissioner, resigned from his post Tuesday to become chairman of Swiss Re America Holding Corp.
