BOSTON — New research shows that injured workers, particularly those with lost-time claims, are likely to die earlier than non-injured workers — the result of depression, opioid dependence and other mental health issues.
“Many workers see effects on their earnings that last past the time that they're no longer on workers' compensation,” and that can impact long-term mental and physical health, leading to higher rates of addiction and suicide, said Les Boden, an economist and professor at Boston University.
