New York authorities this week charged a man with stealing more than $19,000 in workers' compensation benefits after he claimed injury in Connecticut and began work for a moving company in the Bronx.
Darren Henderson, 58, reported that he was injured while working as a driver for a Connecticut moving company in 2013, and began collecting benefits, authorities said in a news release.
An investigation showed that in 2014, he began work for a Bronx-based moving company while representing to the insurance carrier that he was unable to work.
He collected some $19,622 in benefits, according to New York Inspector General Catherine Leahy Scott and Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark.
“Stealing from the Workers’ Compensation insurance program is a serious crime,” said Clark.
Henderson was released and is awaiting a court date.
