The Maryland Senate passed a bill that would allow the Uninsured Employers' Fund Board to direct the Workers' Compensation Commission to increase the assessment on awards and settlements to cover losses.
The Senate voted 35-12 on Friday to pass Senate Bill 219, by the Senate Finance Committee.
The bill would increase to 1.5% from 1% the cap on the special assessment that can be levied when the uninsured employer fund is underfinanced.
SB 219 would also increase unemployment fund balance thresholds for suspending and resuming assessments.
