California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones on Tuesday accused drug manufacturer AbbVie Inc. of paying kickbacks to doctors who prescribed Humira.
The department alleges in a complaint filed in Alameda County Superior Court that AbbVie used cash, meals, drinks, gifts, tips and patient referrals to induce providers to prescribe Humira. Private carriers allegedly paid $1.2 billion for the anti-inflammatory used to treat arthritis and other conditions.
AbbVie allegedly sent registered nurses it called “ambassadors” directly to the homes of patients who were prescribed Humira.
