Insurance Commissioner Accuses Drugmaker of Paying Kickbacks

California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones on Tuesday accused drug manufacturer AbbVie Inc. of paying kickbacks to doctors who prescribed Humira. The department alleges in a complaint filed in Alameda County Superior Court that AbbVie used cash, meals, drinks, gifts, tips and patient referrals to induce providers to prescribe Humira. Private carriers allegedly paid $1.2 billion for the anti-inflammatory used to treat arthritis and other conditions. AbbVie allegedly sent registered nurses it called “ambassadors” directly to the homes of patients who were prescribed Humira. ...
