Pain Management Specialist Arrested

Thursday, September 29, 2016 | 0

Police arrested a Michigan pain management specialist on suspicion of insurance and prescription fraud Monday, saying he illegally distributed opioids that often ended up on the street.

State police officers raided Dr. Lesly Pompy's Monroe County office and home on Monday after a yearlong investigation, multiple media sources reported.

The head of the state police's drug unit called Pompy the largest distributor of controlled substances in Michigan. The doctor prescribed more than 1.2 million doses of narcotics in the past year, Lt. Marc Moore said.

"A lot of these patients are selling his pills on the street," Moore told Bedford Now. Moore said he believes Pompy contributed to Monroe County's heroin problem.

Moore said Pompy, who saw hundreds of patients per day, issued prescriptions for opioids such as Norcos and Oxycodone to people who did not require them.

Moore said he hopes to see Pompy's license to prescribe suspended while the case unfolds.

Pompy was booked into the Monroe County Jail on Monday and released pending formal charges. A voicemail message at his pain management practice reports that the office is closed until Oct. 3.
