The Connecticut Department of Labor issued stop-work orders at 18 ShopRite, Stop and Shop and Whole Foods stores for a variety of labor law violations by cleaning contractors, including failure to provide workers' compensation insurance.
The department issued the stop-work orders to Paraiba Cleaning Corp., based in Worcester, Massachusetts, and USD Cleaning, based in Hartford. In addition to failing to provide insurance and failing to pay overtime, the companies improperly treated workers as independent contractors, the department said in a press release.
