The Alabama Senate unanimously passed a bill that would provide workers' compensation benefits for public school teachers.
Currently, teachers who are injured at work must pay out-of-pocket for treatment and then request reimbursement from the Board of Adjustment.
Senate Bill 1, by Sen. Sam Givhan, R-Huntsville, would create the Public Education Employee Injury Compensation Board to administer a work comp program for teachers, starting Oct. 1, 2026. It would also create a trust fund in the state treasury to fund the program.
