The Los Angeles City Council is seeking review of a deferred retirement program to ascertain why nearly half of the police and firefighters who sign up are filing workers’ compensation claims.
City Councilmember Mitch Englander requested the city’s administrative officer study the Deferred Retirement Option Plan after the Los Angeles Times reported a large percentage of participants ended up filing claims for conditions including cumulative trauma to their knees or back, high blood pressure, carpal tunnel syndrome or cancer.
