North Dakota's monopoly workers' comp insurer paid $173.5 million in claims in the fiscal year ended June 30, 2014, up 29% from the previous fiscal year and 51% from the 2008-09 fiscal year, according to Workforce Safety & Insurance's annual report.
The statistics in the report show the impact of the state's oil boom on its state-run workers' compensation insurer, with higher premiums along with more claims. WSI said 25,835 claims were filed in the 2013-14 fiscal year, or 6.41 per 100 covered workers. That was 4.8% more than the 24,647 claims filed in 2012-2013.
