Retired Cop Pleads Not Guilty to Fraud Charges

Thursday, May 10, 2018 | 0

A retired Los Angeles Police Department officer pleaded not guilty to charges that he engaged in activities inconsistent with his claimed injuries while he was enrolled in a controversial deferred retirement program.

The Daily Breeze reports that Terry Johns, 56, entered his not-guilty plea Tuesday. Johns is charged with three counts of workers’ compensation fraud, three counts of attempted perjury and two counts of insurance fraud.

Johns enrolled in the Deferred Retirement Option Plan, which allowed him to start receiving pension payments while also collecting his regular salary, in 2014. That same year, he filed a workers’ compensation claim for a back injury.

Johns collected nearly $250,000 in pension and salary payments while he was on leave for the back injury, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Prosecutors say Johns lied during a deposition about his activities and also lied to his treating physician about the extent of his injury.
