California lawmakers sent Gov. Jerry Brown a bill that would require ride-sharing companies such as Uber, SideCar and Lyft to carry liability coverage for property damage or injuries to passengers, pedestrians and other motorists caused by their drivers, but not workers’ compensation coverage for the drivers themselves. The thinking is that California law already requires employers to have workers’ compensation coverage for their employees, but not for independent contractors.
