L&I Fines Asbestos Removal Co. $229,700

Wednesday, July 18, 2018 | 0

The Washington state Department of Labor and Industries fined an asbestos removal company $229,700 for exposing workers and the public to unsafe conditions.

The department said in a statement that Above & Beyond Asbestos Removal is also under further review for having “demonstrated a continuous indifference to Washington’s asbestos handling rules which protect workers and the public from harm.”

Inspections at two job sites found similar violations, according to L&I.

Above & Beyond was hired to remove boiler insulation at a Seattle apartment complex. The company was also contracted to remove asbestos ceiling material from a single-family residence.

The department said the company failed to ensure that workers had proper safety equipment, and it did not perform mandatory air quality sampling at either site. The department also said materials containing asbestos were left exposed to the public and were improperly carried through public areas.

Above & Beyond has been cited in the past for similar violations, and the department designated the company as a “sever violator” subjecting it to additional follow-up inspections.
