A Southern California port trucking firm was ordered to pay about $7 million in back pay to 37 drivers the Labor Commissioner’s Office determined were improperly classified as independent contractors rather than employees, the Los Angeles Times reports.
The Times said the commission ordered Pacific 9 Transportation to repay money it deducted from drivers' paychecks to cover lease payments on trucks, as well as insurance and maintenance. In some cases, drivers paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in lease fees and other costs associated with operating Pacific 9 trucks.
