Republicans in the Wisconsin Legislature’s Joint Committee on Finance voted this week to move most of the administrative law judges handling workers’ compensation cases from the Department of Workforce Development to the Department of Administration.
The vote comes as part of Gov. Scott Walker’s budget proposal and would send at least 18 ALJs to the Department of Administration’s Division of Hearings and Appeals, where they would spend at least 80% of their time on workers’ compensation cases. Six judges would stay at the DWD to perform mediation services.
