New York’s state budget for 2016-17 will include $9 million to cover the cost of lost wages and health care expenses for World Trade Center volunteers, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Monday.
The benefits are for volunteers who contracted illnesses at the World Trade Center site in the year after Sept. 11, 2001.
The allocation comes as federal funding through the World Trade Center Volunteer Fund was exhausted last month. The fund, administered by the state Workers' Compensation Board, has provided benefits for about 1,900 people, according to Cuomo’s office.
