Thursday, May 5, 2016 | 0

Applied Underwriters, a Berkshire Hathaway company, is planning to develop 500 acres of farmland in Omaha as offices for its local workforce of about 650 employees, according to news reports.

The development will also include shops, housing, restaurants, hotels and additional office space, the Omaha World Herald reported on Wednesday.

Applied Underwriters’ executive headquarters will remain in the San Francisco Bay area. The company moved most of its operations from California to Omaha in 1998.

Applied Underwriters’ purchase of the property is expected to close this year. Construction could start within 12 to 15 months.

Applied Underwriters Inc. provides workers' compensation and payroll processing services nationwide. The company was acquired in 2006 by Omaha-based Berkshire Hathaway, which also owns the World Herald.
