The 5th District of the Illinois Appellate Court ruled that the City of Carbondale couldn't terminate the health insurance coverage for a police officer who quit working after he banged his head on the door frame of his patrol car.
Under Illinois law, a municipal employer is obligated to pay the entire health insurance premium for any police officer or firefighter, and his spouse and dependent children, if he suffers a "catastrophic injury" that leaves him permanently disabled from returning to duty.
