The rise in the number of employees working from home is opening up a new frontier of workers’ comp claims, in which tripping on a pet’s toy or falling during a stroll through the neighborhood can result in a compensable claim.
Telecommuting also raises its own issues of fraud, according to speakers during a webinar last week hosted by Marsh. In contrast to a conventional workplace, a telecommuter’s injury is often not witnessed and there aren’t cameras around to capture an incident, said Dennis Tierney, Marsh’s director of workers’ compensation claims.
