Exercise riders account for more than half the workers' compensation claims originating in California's horse-racing industry, according to a report by thoroughbredracing.com.
Brad McKinzie, vice president of operations at Finish Line Self-Insurance Group, said about 64% of the approximately 290 comp claims from the racing industry each year pertain to exercise riders.
While McKinzie said exercise riders account for the biggest group of losses in California, he also said the state is the safest place for exercise riders to work.
