Price Hike for Opioid Antidote Raising Eyebrows

A 6.5-fold price increase for an auto-injectable form of opioid antidote naloxone is being called exorbitant by workers’ comp pharmacy benefit managers, but the maker of the drug said the price hike is to ensure widespread access to the drug. The Evzio auto-injector is produced by Kaléo, a privately held drug company based in Richmond, Virginia. Kaléo released Evzio in July 2014 at an average wholesale price of $690, and since then has increased the price twice to $900 per kit in November 2015 and to $4,500 in February.
