The Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation reported a former police officer pleaded guilty to workers' compensation fraud, a fifth-degree felony, and was sentenced to make restitution and placed on community control for five years.
The Franklin County Common Pleas Court ordered Paul Thornton of Willoughby to repay the bureau $56,511, the agency said.
Thornton injured himself in 1991 while working for the Cleveland police department.
He was involved in an automobile accident on his way to help another police officer and injured his chest, back shoulder, leg and head, according to the bureau.
