Following news that deaths and injuries from hanging scaffolds nearly doubled in 2006, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg launched $6 million in safety initiatives.
Bloomberg announced the safety changes Wednesday, following a critical report from a city task force warning of a "breakdown in accountability," the Staten Island Advance reported.
The report, issued by Bloomberg's Suspended Scaffold Worker Safety Task Force, said construction contractors consistently violate basic safety rules when they employ non-English-speaking day laborers.
