The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has issued recommendations on how to protect field and laboratory workers from the West Nile virus.
NIOSH said outdoor, laboratory, field, and clinical workers are at risk of West Nile virus exposure. Although the virus is most often transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes, it can also be transmitted through contact with infected animals, their blood, or other tissues. Outdoor workers are at risk of WNV exposure whenever mosquitoes are biting, NIOSH said.
