In one of the largest employer fraud cases ever alleged in California, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday that Checkmate Staffing Inc. agreed to settle a lawsuit against it by State Compensation Insurance Fund for $5.8 million. The sum represents premiums the firm should have paid on underreported payroll for the period May 24, 2000, to June 1, 2001. However, a criminal investigation of the firm continues.
