Pennsylvania Environmental Protection Secretary Kathleen McGinty reported unannounced inspections Aug. 13 at two mine sites where retreat mining is taking place show the operations are being conducted safely.
McGinty said the inspections were made at the direction of Gov. Edward Rendell following the collapse of the Crandall Canyon Mine in Utah, trapping six miners.
