UnumProvident Corporation (NYSE: UNM) today reported after-tax operating
income before special items and net realized investment losses of
$155.0 million ($0.64 per diluted common share) for the third quarter of 2002.
These results compare to $148.6 million ($0.61 per diluted common share) for
the third quarter of 2001. Including the impact of the attacks on the United
States on September 11, 2001, which resulted in after-tax losses of
