Federal regulators, state regulators in Rhode Island and Kentucky, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise Systems and the Texas-based government contractor HMS are all telling workers’ compensation payers the same thing: It’s time to start paying Medicaid.
Although state Medicaid programs have had a right — and an obligation — since the 1960s to recover money from workers’ compensation payers when Medicaid pays for the treatment of work injuries, they have rarely done so because of difficulties figuring out which patients were eligible for benefits under both systems.
