Finger Amputations Lead to OSHA Citations

A 33-year-old worker at a metal stamping company lost three fingers in a mechanical power press, leading to 13 safety citations against the employer. Ohio Gasket & Shim Co. of Akron faces $103,600 in proposed penalties from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the agency said in a news release. In an investigation following the June 5 accident, OSHA found the power press did not have the required safety guards, exposing the worker to operating parts of the machine when he switched from hand to foot controls.
