Contractor Gets Lifetime Ban, Probation for Premium Fraud

Wednesday, December 6, 2023 | 0

A Minnesota wood-framing contractor convicted of premium fraud was banned from applying for state and federal contracts and ordered to serve two years of probation, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported Monday.

Nelson Israel Lopez Giron, 35, was sentenced late Monday on felony workers’ compensation insurance fraud charges. He allegedly misrepresented his payroll when purchasing a workers’ compensation policy.

Giron paid annual premiums of about $671 for Giron Construction. Had he reported true figures, his premiums would have been about $20,500, according to the report.

The fraud was revealed when one of Giron’s workers injured his eye.

Giron reportedly told the worker not to tell doctors how the injury occurred.

The worker sought treatment at a hospital and filed a workers’ compensation claim.

Giron allegedly told his carrier that he didn’t know the worker, resulting in the comp claim's denial.
