RGA Reinsurance Co. has released a report identifying 183 high-cost specialty drugs, defined as those costing more than $7,000 a month or $50,000 a year, based on their wholesale costs.
Of the 183 drugs on the list, 126, or 69%, cost more than $100,000 a year. Forty-eight of the drugs, or 26%, cost more than $200,000 annually. The most expensive drugs in annual cost include:
Glybera, which is indicated for the treatment of lipoprotein lipase deficiency ($1.21 million). This product is not yet approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration but is available in Europe.
