Updated Rating Bureau Study Finds Average COVID Claim Cost $9,600

An updated study prepared by 10 workers’ compensation rating bureaus throughout the country found the average cost of a claim for COVID-19 in accident years 2020 and 2021 was $9,600. On average, claims for COVID-19 that accounted for 11% of lost-time cases in 2020 fell to 4% of claims in 2021. The National Council on Compensation Insurance said that about 75% of lost-time claims came from the health care sector.
