Business Owner Sentenced for Comp, Tax Fraud

A Massachusetts business owner convicted of paying workers cash under the table was ordered to pay $207,572 in restitution to workers’ compensation carriers at a sentencing hearing last week, federal prosecutors announced. Richard McLaughlin, 61, pleaded guilty in December 2020 to five counts of filing false tax returns and three counts of mail fraud. Prosecutors said McLaughlin used off-the-books accounts to make payroll in part of a scheme that evaded nearly $750,000 in federal taxes.
