Bill Proposes Penalties for Workplace Coercion Based on Immigration Status

A bill introduced ahead of the 2025 legislative session in Washington state would authorize penalties of up to $10,000 if employers threaten or coerce workers based on their immigration status. Senate Bill 5104, by Sen. Bob Hasegawa, D-Seattle, would authorize a fine of $1,000 for a first violation, $5,000 for a second violation and $10,000 for third and subsequent violations. The bill would also require that the penalties be adjusted for inflation every three years.
