More than 5,300 American workers died from on-the-job injuries in 2019, the highest total in more than a decade, according to a Bureau of Labor Statistics report released last month.
The total was a 2% jump over 2018 fatalities and was the largest amount in any year since 2007.
Fatalities for workers over 55 increased 8%, from 1,863 in 2018 to just over 2,000 in 2019, according to the report.
The 2019 figure was the largest ever recorded for that age group. Overall, workers over 55 made up 38% of all workplace deaths in 2019.
