Few of the 50 million annual visitors to Walt Disney World in Florida may realize it, but the world's most popular amusement park has its own municipal government.
Reedy Creek Improvement District was created by the Florida Legislature in 1967, specifically to enclose 25,000 acres around the planned resort area and manage the infrastructure and public services to the park.
The district's website notes that the novel approach produced a “progressive form of government” that is fairly unique in Florida and beyond.
