The California Department of Insurance announced that the owners of a janitorial firm were charged with fraud for allegedly underreporting payroll by more than $2.4 million to reduce their work comp premiums and dodge payroll taxes.
The department said it launched an investigation into Jose Arredondo, 50, and his wife, Olga Chaves, 45, after an employee of their San Bernardino County company was injured and their carrier suspected fraud.
