Fish Hatchery Exposed Workers to Confined-Space Hazards

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service exposed workers at the Pendills Creek National Fish Hatchery in Brimley, Michigan, to atmospheric, water, amputation and asbestos hazards by failing to evaluate tanks and pits for confined-space hazards. OSHA cited the Fish and Wildlife Service for 11 serious, one repeated and one other-than-serious violation on Oct. 15. OSHA does not impose penalties against federal agencies, however if a private-sector employer had committed the violations, it would have resulted in $70,500 in fines, the agency said.
