The bookkeeper for a tree removal business in Massachusetts is accused of lying about the nature of the company’s business to reduce its workers’ compensation premiums by more than $100,000, according to a report by the Salem News.
Barbara Marsan, 66, was indicted by a grand jury in Essex County on Monday. She’s charged with five counts of workers’ compensation fraud, four counts of larceny over $250 and one count of larceny over $1,200, according to the report.
Marsan, who managed the books for Alvelo Enterprises, allegedly told a workers’ compensation carrier that the company primarily engaged in landscaping work rather than tree removal and pruning.
Prosecutors allege that the claims reduced the company’s workers’ compensation premiums by a total of $100,575 from 2014 to 2018.
Marsan has not been arraigned, and an arraignment date has not been set.
