Kentucky Mines Set Safety Record

The two deaths recorded in Kentucky's surface coal mines last year set a new state safety record, the state Environmental and Protection Cabinet announced last week.Kentucky Department of Natural Resources Commissioner Susan Bush said in a release that Kentucky leads the nation in the number of coal mines and is the nation's third-largest producer of coal.Records dating back o 1890 indicate Kentucky suffered its deadliest decade in the 1920s, when 1,614 mining fatalities were recorded.
